Youth Prevention Specialist - Hill Country, Texas
Description

The Youth Prevention Specialist is responsible for the delivery of universal, selected and/or indicated prevention services. As a Youth Prevention Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in the community by developing relationships and implementing evidence-based curriculum to reduce drug and alcohol misuse among youth and adults in Kendall, Kerr and Bandera Counties. In addition, services include the promotion of social-emotional learning for youth. The State’s four prevention priorities: underage alcohol use, tobacco and nicotine products, marijuana and
other cannabinoid use, and prescription drug misuse and the use and misuse of other drugs and substances. These services promote a proactive process to address adverse childhood experiences, social determinants of health, and/or other youth, family and community risk and protective factors. This position is grant funded through 8/31/2029.

Responsibilities

• Learn and thoroughly understand the philosophy of the Council, its programs, services and resources available for children and families.
• Implement and facilitate evidence-based substance abuse prevention curriculum (Positive Action, or Curriculum Based Support Group -Youth Connection) programs and trainings aimed at educating individuals and communities about the potential risks of substance use.
• Implement the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Strategies that include delivery of prevention education, information dissemination, alternatives and
identification of problems and referral to services. Seek out partnerships with local schools and community organizations to implement the Council's evidence-based substance abuse programs.

• Establish program sites within these institutions to deliver and integrate the curricula effectively.
• Preparation for sessions and documentation of weekly or bi-weekly groups.
• Create engaging and structured alternative activities aimed at promoting positive experiences and learning valuable skills. These activities should offer enjoyable
challenges while ensuring they are constructive and healthy ways for individuals to spend their free time.
• Collaborate with local coalitions, community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders to promote substance misuse prevention efforts.
• Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify local trends and needs related to substance use.
• Provide referrals to counseling and support services to individuals and families affected by substance use disorders.
• Facilitate training sessions to equip families and professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively address substance use disorders.
• Become the local Subject Matter Expert (SME) for community members seeking information on substance misuse prevention, recovery and treatment options.
• Provide both written and oral monthly reports concerning program activities and evaluation information to the Youth Prevention Director.
• Prepare and complete accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports by deadline while following organization and funding requirements.
• Meetings online are a regular occurrence, and employees are expected to be punctual, prepared, and professionally dressed for all meetings and trainings.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in the field of education, social and/or human services, or public health preferred; commensurate experience accepted as determined by the Chief Executive Director.
• Proven experience in substance use/misuse prevention and community engagement.
• Strong knowledge of current substance use /misuse prevention strategies, best practices, and evidence-based interventions.
• Experience teaching and working with youth and some knowledge of Trauma Informed Care practices.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and educate diverse populations.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve annual program objectives.
• Exceptional organization and time management skills to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Knowledge of local resources and treatment options for substance use disorders.

Sexual Harassment Awareness Training at Orientation
• HIV/AIDS Mode Workplace Guidelines Training at Orientation
• Complete Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Training within 60 days of employment or have valid certification upon hire. Must maintain valid certification while employed.
• Complete Suicide Prevention Training, Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid Training within 90 days of employment or have valid certifications upon hire.
• Attend and complete the HHSC scheduled Trainings and Technical Assistance for this project.
• Complete Sexual Harassment Awareness Training at Orientation.
• Complete Trauma Informed Care Training at Orientation.
• Complete HIV/ AIDS Model Workplace Guidelines Training at Orientation.

Complete Continuum of Care Training Annually.
• Complete Reporting Child Abuse Training Annually.
• Complete Stigma Reduction, Overdose Prevention Training Annually.
• Complete HHSC Cyber Security Training Annually.
• Complete Human Trafficking Awareness Training Annually.
• Complete Safety trainings as scheduled or assigned. (Active Shooter/ Stop the Bleed)
• Attend the Annual Prevention Provider meeting.
• Annually Complete Cultural Competence and Prevention-related Ethics.
• Complete required training of the evidence-based curriculum that will be implemented.
• Complete Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) with a minimum of 12 months experience delivering prevention services (one-time required training).
• Maintain a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) specifically related to prevention and/or job-related duties annually
